Deputy Prime Minister Bill English was the guest of honour at the opening of GMP Pharmaceuticals' brand new East Tamaki facility.

The site officially began production on Friday.

English and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross were invited along for a tour and to be part of an announcement which saw the company named as a sponsor of the New Zealand Olympic team.

The state-of-the-art Averton Place facility is a production line that will distribute pharmaceuticals throughout New Zealand and globally.

English says he is blown away by the facility and the positive effect it promises to have on the community.

"Despite the fact my colleague Jami-Lee is always boasting about the impressive businesses in his electorate, this one has been a surprise to me", he says.

"The level of technical and management skill involved is amazing. One of the privileges of this job is that I get to visit places I would otherwise never get to go to.

"To see this scale of innovation, initiative and enterprise that keeps the community employed is something very special."
